FAQs
Answers to common questions we receive:
What is the current UK legal minimum tread depth?
. Current UK law requires car, van and LCV drivers are required to have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference.
What are the consequences of driving below the legal tread depth?
Drivers who fail to comply with the regulations face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.
What should I look for when checking my tyres?
Your tyre pressures should be checked in line with the vehicle manufacturers’ recommended settings. However, if your vehicle is heavily loaded you will need to take this into consideration as you may need to increase the pressure in the tyres
Tread depths should be checked to ensure they meet the legal minimum regulation. You should also give your tyres a thorough visual check of the overall condition of your tyres. Be alert for any lumps or bulges and cuts as well as checking for any foreign objects that may have become embedded within the tread
Why is it so important about correct tyre pressure?
Under or over inflated tyres causes irregularities in the handling of the car and a reduction in tyre grip on the road leading to unpredictable car behaviour. Under inflated tyres are also more likely to suffer from a sudden rapid deflation leading to premature wear on the outer edges of the tyre. The wheel rim and tyre will also be more likely to become susceptible to impact damage.
Over inflated tyres reduces the surface area of contact with the road which in turn results in less grip and accelerated wear on the centre of the tread
By taking care of your pressures and checking them regularly, will ultimately reduce your running costs and increasing the life of your tyres
What is my correct tyre pressure?
Correct tyre pressure is important for safety but also fuel efficiency. You can find the correct information for your vehicles tyres in the manufacturer’s handbook, but also in most cars these details are also inside the rim of the driver’s door (and sometimes on the petrol cap).

How often do I need to change my tyres?
Tyres ideally should be checked at least once a month and always before embarking on a long journey. The tyre inspection should include:
- Correct air pressure
- Visual inspection of the overall condition
- Tread depth
- Don’t forget to check your spare!
