EXHAUSTS
Your cars exhaust system plays many important roles in the smooth running of your vehicle. An exhaust systems role it to direct fumes from fuel combustion out of the car. This reduces the noxious emissions and harmful particles that are produced, improves fuel consumption and also dampens the noise levels created by the cars engine.
As your exhaust system plays a crucial role, it is very important that any issues you have are identified and dealt with.
It’s a good idea to get into the habit of doing the most simplistic of checks – a visual check for any physical signs of damage
Signs that your exhaust needs some TLC!
- Listen out for signs that could indicate you have a problem . The silencer is the part of the exhaust that usually needs attention first because this part is the furthest away from the engine and is therefore most likely to become corroded by acidic moisture. This occurs because these parts remain relatively cold allowing the exhaust gases to condense and form pools of corrosive acid inside the system. You can identify if you have this problem very easily because your exhaust will make a loud roaring noise!
- Additional noises to listen out for include hissing. This indicates a potential crack in either the exhaust pipe, the exhaust manifold, or it could be a leaking gasket. If the noise you experience is more of a chugging noise, this could point towards a blockage somewhere in the exhaust system.
- Rattling coming from underneath your car could mean that the exhaust system has become misaligned or it could be that something is touching the exhaust pipe causing the rattle or a support bracket or mounting is loose. The brackets hold your exhaust in place, so these play an important part and if these become corroded, damaged or fall off, it can cause extra stress/vibration to the exhausts housing which in turn can lead to premature exhaust failure.
The good news is you don’t have to be an expert in exhausts as we are!
